What Does "Kill" Mean in Volleyball Stats?
The kill is the volleyball stat everyone quotes, but plenty of coaches still count it loosely. Here is exactly what earns a kill, how it differs from a plain attack attempt, and why it sits at the top of every box score.
What a kill means as a volleyball stat
A kill is the most-watched volleyball stat because it is the cleanest measure of who finished the point. In plain terms, a player earns a kill any time an attack directly ends the rally in their team's favor. The ball hits the floor on the other side, or the block deflects it out of bounds, or a defender touches it but cannot keep it in play. If your attack immediately wins the point, that is a kill, credited to the hitter who swung.
That is the whole volleyball kill definition, and it is worth stating carefully because coaches often bend it. A hard swing that the other team digs cleanly is not a kill. A tip that drops for a point is. The speed and the highlight value do not matter. The only question is whether the attack ended the rally with a point.
Kill vs attack attempt: the difference that trips people up
Every kill starts as an attack attempt, but not every attempt becomes a kill. An attack attempt is any swing, tip, or roll shot a player takes at the ball with the intent to score. From that one action, three things can happen:
- Kill: the attack ends the rally and your team wins the point.
- Attack error: the attack ends the rally and the other team wins the point. Think a ball hit out, into the net, or stuffed straight down by the block.
- Zero attack (a continue): the ball stays in play. The defense digs it, or your hit comes back over and the rally goes on.
Those three buckets are the backbone of every attacking line in the box score. Kills and errors are terminal, which means they finish the rally. The continue keeps things alive. Once you can sort a swing into one of these three the moment it happens, your attack stats stop being guesswork.
Why the kill sits at the top of the box score
Points win volleyball, and attacking is how most points are scored. Serving aces and blocks matter, but the bulk of a set is decided by which team converts its swings. That is why the kill leads the box score and why recruiters, commentators, and coaches reach for it first. A hitter with 18 kills clearly carried a big share of the offense.
The catch is that raw kills alone can mislead. A player can rack up kills simply by taking a huge number of swings, some of which sail long or get blocked. To judge a hitter fairly you pair kills with attempts and errors, which gives you hitting percentage, also called attack efficiency.
Hitting % = (kills - attack errors) / total attack attemptsA hitter with 12 kills, 2 errors, and 25 attempts is at (12 - 2) / 25 = .400, which is excellent. A hitter with the same 12 kills but 8 errors and 40 attempts is at just .100, and that gap is invisible if you only count kills. When I train a new stat-taker, I give them one rule for the kill: watch the floor, not the swing. The temptation is to credit a kill the instant a hitter crushes the ball, but the point is not over until it lands or the whistle blows. I have them wait half a beat and ask "did that end the rally for us?" before they log anything. It cuts phantom kills on balls the other team actually dug, and it makes your hitting percentage honest, which is the number that actually shapes practice.
How a kill is recorded during a match
On a paper scoresheet a kill is usually marked with a K next to the hitter's number, an attack error with an E, and a total-attempts tally that includes every swing. In a live tool the same thing happens the moment you log the result of the attack. The scorer notes the player, the skill (attack), and the result (a point), and the software rolls it into kills, attempts, errors, and hitting percentage without any arithmetic on your end.
The one habit that keeps kill stats clean is consistency about what counts as an attempt. Overpasses that you swat back over, free balls you send deep, and tips all count as attack attempts if the player is trying to score. Decide your rule before the match and apply it the same way every rally so your season numbers stay comparable.
Kills, blocks, and who gets credit
One gray area worth settling: when your attack gets blocked straight down for a point against you, that is an attack error for your hitter and a block for the other team, not a kill for anyone on your side. When your hitter tools the block, meaning the ball ricochets off the blocker's hands and out of bounds, that is a kill for your hitter. The rule stays the same throughout: a kill belongs to the attacker whose swing ended the rally in their team's favor, however the ball got to the floor.
